Man or woman, we are all tempted sometimes to step outside the boundaries of God’s intent for sexual purity. Here are four practical ways to help you beat “the adulterous” ______ that vies for your attention.
- Remember the principles you have been taught. Proverbs 6:23-24 says, “For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life, to preserve you from the evil woman, from the smooth tongue of the adulteress.” Simply put, setting your mind on godly truth is a staunch opposition to the devil’s tempting schemes.
- Guard your heart. We are warned in Proverbs 6:25 to “not desire her beauty in your heart, and do not let her capture you with her eyelashes.” Sometimes the enemy tries to convince us that the evil we desire is actually good. Be on guard for these lies. They are persuasive and can easily deceive the human mind.
- Fight the urge to flirt with temptation. “Can a man carry fire next to his chest and his clothes not be burned?” (Proverbs 6:27). The question is rhetorical. The closer you are to the heat, the more likely you are to encounter the consequences. Keep your distance from the danger that you are drawn to.
- Think of the consequences. Proverbs 6:29-35 is an instructive narrative regarding the consequences of moral failure: “he will not go unpunished…he will pay sevenfold…he who does it destroys himself…he will get wounds and dishonor and his disgrace will not be wiped away.” Making a list of individuals that would be directly affected by your sexual failure can help you foresee the devastation that would come if you gave into the temptation.
Remember, you can beat temptation (1 Cor. 10:13)! You don’t have to fall! God Almighty is ready to fight for you. Seek and share with him your struggle, and ask for strength. I guarantee he will provide.
